Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) is an approach to landscaping that emphasizes the use of plants, design principles, and practices that are well-suited to Florida’s climate, soil, and natural conditions. The program is designed to promote sustainable landscaping practices that conserve water, reduce pollution, and protect the state’s natural resources.
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping program is guided by these principles:
Right Plant, Right Place
Selecting plants that are suited to the specific conditions of your landscape, including soil type, sunlight, and water availability.
Water Efficiently
Using water wisely, which includes proper irrigation techniques and choosing drought-tolerant plants.
Fertilize Appropriately
Using fertilizers sparingly and following proper application guidelines to prevent nutrient runoff into water bodies.
Mulch
Applying mulch to conserve moisture, reduce weeds, and maintain soil health.
Attract Wildlife
Creating a landscape that provides food, water, and shelter for local wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and beneficial insects.
Manage Yard Pests Responsibly
Using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques to control pests with minimal impact on the environment.
Recycle Yard Waste
Composting and recycling yard waste to enrich soil and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
Reduce Stormwater Runoff
Implementing landscaping techniques that minimize runoff and improve water quality, such as rain gardens and permeable surfaces.
Protect the Waterfront
If you live near water, taking steps to protect water bodies from pollution and erosion.
These principles help create landscapes that are not only beautiful and functional but also environmentally friendly, reducing the need for excessive water, fertilizers, and pesticides. The program is supported by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) and is widely promoted across the state to encourage homeowners, businesses, and communities to adopt sustainable landscaping practices.
